ICD-10-CM Annual Updates

Stay current with the latest ICD-10-CM code changes, additions, and revisions released each fiscal year.

Understanding Annual ICD-10 Updates

CMS releases ICD-10-CM updates annually, effective October 1 of each year. Staying current with these changes is essential for accurate coding and clean claims.

Update Cycle

ICD-10-CM codes are updated each federal fiscal year (October 1 - September 30). Claims must use codes valid for the date of service, not the submission date. Using outdated or premature codes results in claim rejections.

Select a Fiscal Year

Why Updates Matter

Understanding and implementing annual updates correctly is critical for compliance and reimbursement.

Clean Claims

Using valid codes for the date of service prevents automatic rejections and reduces rework.

Audit Readiness

Auditors review coding against guidelines in effect for the service date. Using the correct year's codes prevents findings.

Accurate Specificity

New codes often provide greater specificity for conditions previously coded with unspecified codes.

Types of Annual Changes

New Codes

Each year, CMS adds new codes to capture emerging conditions, provide greater specificity, or reflect advances in medical knowledge. New codes are only valid for dates of service on or after October 1 of the effective year.

Deleted Codes

Codes may be deleted when they're replaced by more specific options, combined with other codes, or no longer clinically relevant. Deleted codes are invalid for services on or after October 1 of the deletion year.

Revised Codes

Existing codes may be revised with changes to descriptions, Excludes notes, Includes notes, Code First instructions, or Use Additional Code requirements. These changes can affect how codes should be sequenced or combined.

Guideline Updates

The Official Coding Guidelines are also updated annually. Changes may affect how codes should be assigned, sequenced, or used in combination. Always refer to the guidelines in effect for the date of service.
